Things moved quickly from there, and two nights later, Kaylin and Rahl ducked into the side street running beside the house of a mid-range merchant. Crovard was sleeping in preparation for taking on the day shift, both guards having decided one of them had to be fresh and on-call.

With his ability to see in the lower lighting, Rahl was the logical choice for the night shift. Neither of them had been happy not to be accompanying her at all times, but both saw the necessity to split their duties.

The king’s impending arrival fooled no one, and rumors were already running high that people had sighted palace agents in the city.

“Those assholes would have left when the call went out for the army to gather,” Bregavik stated with his usual candor.

Kaylin glanced at Keregar and made a note to speak to the dwarven leader about whether or not his advisor really needed to attend any diplomatic gatherings.

“Not all,” Keregar had agreed to Kaylin’s relief, adding, “although there will be somewhere his particular form of negotiation will be advantageous.”

Kaylin hadn’t been able to think of any until Keregar spoke again.

“Rogshere, for example.”

That had made sense, and Kaylin had left it up to the clan leader what meetings Bregavik attended, trusting his judgment in even the most unlikely cases. The meeting with Andreia had been most enlightening, with the woman showing a turn of phrase Kaylin hadn’t expected.

“I hope you’re taking notes,” Cavill muttered as the woman described exactly what she thought of the idea that even one of her people might slow the rescue effort.

Kaylin had managed to keep a straight face as she’d listened to Andreia’s commentary, but her jaw dropped at Bregavik’s response. Positive their arrangements were in tatters, Kaylin was about to grieve the loss of the mercenary’s company when Andreia shrugged.

“Well, if you put it like that,” she acquiesced, “sure. We’ll do it your way.”

As successful as that negotiation had proven, it didn’t mean Kaylin wanted the advisor along when she went to speak to the merchants. Fortunately, Keregar had agreed.

“He’s a little too blunt for that lot,” the clan leader said. “I’ll send Lansard. They’ll need a human touch…and Astara, since it’s dwarves they’ll need to deal with, and she’s the best way to ease them into the idea.”

The earth mage’s grumbling acceptance of the mission made Kaylin worry what the worst way was…then she caught Bregavik’s quiet smile.

They’d arrived at the merchant’s house separately and left the same way, the meeting’s commencement and ending taking two hours apiece.

“It’s the best way to avoid notice,” Kaylin had explained. “Any large groups will draw attention…and by large, I mean greater than one or two.”

She and Rahl were the last to leave. Wivre took flight as soon as the door had closed behind them. The merchant families would be ready to depart when the call came—and hadn’t waited for them to clear the room before they’d started packing.

Kaylin wrinkled her nose at the stench of an open sewer outlet blending with the smells rising off a neighboring tannery.
